Wood Art

Pyrography by definition is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. It is also known as poker work or wood burning. The term pyrography literally means “writing with fire” and dates back to the 17th century. The pyrography pieces listed for sale by Island Chic Originals are hand-drawn and original, without the use of stencils or tracing of any kind. Live-edge Western Maple, Alder, Yellow Cedar and Pacific Yew wood is purchased locally on Vancouver Island in four to five-foot lengths. It is then cut into smaller pieces for making wall plaques. Each plaque is thoroughly sanded and the bark cleaned of debris. Original, one-of-a-kind designs to suit the shape and size of the wood pieces are hand-drawn with a soft pencil. A Razor Tip wood-burning tool is used to burn the outlines and shade the images, using pyrographic techniques. Once completed, the pieces receive two coats of outdoor quality verathane finish, allowing for the pieces to be displayed outdoors if desired. Each piece has a sawtooth hook attached and is ready to hang.
